Kids can help put a smile on Dad’s (or Mom’s) face when they put a smiley face on a delicious pancake!
What you’ll need:
- Your favorite pancake mix
—OR—
- 1 ¼ cups flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 beaten egg
- 1 ¼ cups buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
—AND—
- 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- mixing bowls, measuring cups, measuring spoons, fork, mixing spoon, griddle, spatula, plastic food storage bag
- fruit or other toppings (optional)
Directions:
Follow directions for your favorite pancake mix. Or mix together flour, baking soda, baking powder, sugar, salt in mixing bowl. In another bowl, lightly beat egg with a fork, then combine with buttermilk and melted butter. Add liquid ingredients to dry ingredients and stir until just mixed.
Remove about a ¼ cup of batter, and mix it in another bowl with the cocoa powder and sugar. Put it in a food storage bag.
Grown-ups should set a lightly greased griddle to medium heat. Take the food storage bag and cut off the corner. Let your child use the batter from the bag to make eyes, a nose, and a mouth on the griddle. Let cook for about one minute, then pour plain batter over the funny face to make a pancake. When the pancake is bubbly, turn and continue cooking.
As you and your child perfect this technique, you can also make pancake faces of some of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters!
Let you child embellish the funny face with fruit or other toppings as desired and serve up laughter to the whole family for breakfast!
